My son is a BMSN and was so excited to get to the fleet. He always talked about BMs being the 'backbone of the fleet' and also about the comraderie amongst the BMs. I'm really happy that he found such a group to be a part of. What do you contribute to the BMs being such a closeknit group?

bmama: The BM rating is one of the oldest ratings in the United States Navy. Because of this, there is plenty of tradition, honor and pride associated with the BM rating. This fact alone makes the BM Rate special. BMs are usually hard working sailors who are usually noted as strong leaders who are not timid when it comes to stepping up in situations requiring specific direction. BMs are also known to be rather "worldly" when it comes to the adventurous aspect of sailor's life. BMs are the "salt of the ocean".

Boats - Great site! You don't see too many USN BM sites online.

BOATS! I am also glad to see this site, I am a BM2 up for BM1 next in a few weeks. I was born to do this and when I die I hope to be re-encarnated as a Boatswain's Mate to do it all over again.

Thanks for the reference Boats. Good products, that Shadow box is gorgeous. I also liked the different colored Bos'n Pipes, thats definietly different. Well the BMR really killed me this time during the exam. No matter what I am never prepared for the BMR portion for exams, especially now that it is 1/2 my test. Any advice at all for some stradegies on studying BMR? Thank you again in advance, I've been telling my colleagues and peers about this site.

Check out www.pmktraining.com. That site makes up practice Professsional military training exams from the bibliography references. It should be sure to help...

My father was just as proud to boast being a Boatswain’s Mate as he was to be US Navy Mustang. I know why being a Mustang is an accomplishment that deserves great respect. In my youth, other military people would hold my fathers accomplishment as a Boatswain Mate with the same reverence. A year after his death I find myself trying to answer questions to his grandchildren that I never asked my father. What does one do to earn the title Boatswain’s Mate? Why is the rank Boatswain’s Mate so special? What does a Boatswain’s Mate do? Finally, was he a “Boatswain’s Mate” or a “Bosun Mate”?

Senior, I ran across this site looking for a training manual. It's a great site you have. I'm a BM3 in the USCG and I was looking for someplace I could get a copy of the Non-Resident Training Course for Boatswain's Mate (NAVEDTRA 14343) Do you know where I might be able to get a copy of it? I have the online version of it, but I thought it'd be great to have the book version of it to keep in our Bosun's Hole on the ship. I think it's a great reference guide for the BM rating, and even for being a Petty Officer. If I'm not able to get a copy of it due to me being in the Coast Guard, then thanks for your time at least to read this. Great site Senior. One 'Boats' sayin hey to all the others.
